Get the Inside Track
for growing grapes in North Carolina.
We're excited about the Piedmont's potential for growing the superior varieties of grapes necessary for creating world-class wines. The terrior, with its combination of the temperate climate, a long growing season and the gravelly- clay soil are the key natural features of Childress Vineyards. And with its rich agricultural history, the region offers a "back to the soil" lifestyle.

Under the care of our vineyard manager, Matt Chobanian, Childress Vineyards will take full advantage of North Carolina's potential for growing grapes.

Matt Chobanian

A highly regarded viticulturalist and a long-time Richard Childress Racing fan, Chobanian enjoys the hands on experience of growing grapes. He is employing a unique trellis system at Childress Vineyards which he developed to lengthen the "hang time" of the grapes on the vine. Our grapes will continue to ripen during the most critical end phase of the growing season, producing the subtle nuances necessary for more sophisticated flavor profiles. You might say that our grapes have what it takes to go the extra mile.

Since April 2003, Chobanian has directed the planting of nine varieties of premium European vitus vinifera cultivars here at Childress Vineyards. Varietals of Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Syrah and Sangiovese can be seen hanging from the vines spread over our 65 acres.
