Expansion to bring more than 200 jobs

By Kelly Kramp, High Point ENTERPRISE

LEXINGTON - The addition of a hotel and retail complex at Childress Vineyards will add more than 200 jobs and millions of dollars to Davidson County's economy.

Both The Shoppes at Vineyards Crossing and The Inn at Vineyards Crossing will be built on the grounds of the vineyard, just off U.S. 64 in Lexington. Construction of both is expected to begin in the next few weeks and will be complete by spring.

"It's going to make a statement for Davidson County. I'm proud to put it in Davidson County because Davidson County needs something to boost our economy," said Richard Childress during a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday.

Childress, a former race car driver and now NASCAR team owner, opened the vineyard last year.

The hotel will create about 15 new jobs. Hiring will begin in March, and developer Terry Baker said the hotel will provide training for employees. Construction of the hotel will create a $4.2 million investment.

The retail development will be built in phases. Eventually the development will include 30 to 40 shops covering 85,000-square-feet.

The mix of high-end retail and restaurants is expected to create about 200 jobs and a $16.5 million investment.

Greg Johns, developer and Childress Vineyards partner, said the developments will not only provide jobs but boost tourism as well.

"Our vision is this is a place of destination not only for North Carolina but the southeast United States," Johns said. "It's people putting money back in the economy here at home."
